YIGA For Children Foundation was founded by Yiga Ben.
Ben, as he is more commonly referred to, understands what it means to lose a family. He suffered such trauma at a young age, similarly to most of the children his charity cares for today. Ben spent many years living on the streets and searching for food and a place to sleep. These circumstances are a normal and terrible part of every day life in Uganda.
After finding a full time job far from his home village of Kalagala, Ben decided that he would do what he can with what was now a small but more reliable source of income. What started with a single child, has now led to the daily care of 31 poverty stricken, traumatised children. Ben started by opening up his home to local orphans, providing for their very basic needs to continue living. After a while, word spread further around the local area and new children started arriving.
As of August 2022, Ben continues to work his full time employment with the support of a tiny team. Now caring for 31 orphans, the charity also cares for children from other families who have lost loved ones, by providing a meal at least once per day. As one can imagine, caring for a small family is challenging enough, let alone an extended family of 31 children+ .
The charities team comprise of few individuals. Ben, has the support from a local church with one particular volunteer who supports with providing daily care for the children full time. Ben, focuses on building sustainable sources of food for the growing family but as one can imagine, this is not easy with limited resources.
With any generous donations received, we plan to build more sustainable food sources and infrastructure to provide greater capacity for the needs of so many young. The next phase is to invest in the educational needs to ensure as the children grow, they become more independent and have the ability to lead positive lives with a broader impact on the local community.
